New Dermalogica Ultra Calming Duo Review

New launches from Dermalogica always get me excited, they are always coming out with innovative products to cater to all needs. And it is no different with the launch of the Dermalogica Ultra calming Duo, the newest additions to the Ultra Calming range, consisting of the Calm Water Gel and the Barrier Defense Booster. The Ultra Calming range was created to support and repair compromised and sensitive skins, and help reduce the the occurrence of further skin issues.

Dermalogica Ultra Calming Duo Review

I have been using these products for nearly two months, and have used it when my skin was its normal self, as well as post Dermapen and Laser treatments when my skin was sensitive, itchy and red. My skin is not overly sensitive, however it is dehydrated, which is one of the most common issues facing sensitive skin types, although dehydration can affect all skin types from dry to oily. The reason that dehydration occurs in most sensitive skins, is because the skin’s barrier is compromised. Luckily, Dermalogica has us covered with these two new launches, which will repair the barrier, as well as increase hydration, and will provide relief to the most sensitive skins.

Calming Sensitive Skin with Dermalogica

The first step to calming sensitised skin, would be the *Barrier Defense Booster (R1220), which is a light oil that can be used alone, under your moisturiser, or mixed in with you moisturiser. It soothes the skin, repairs the skin barrier, and reduces inflammation. A strong skin barrier is important to protect the skin from the harsh effects of the environment and dehydration. The Barrier Defense Booster contains Oat Oil to combat sensitivity and support healthy skin, Squalane to lock in moisture, and a Triple Defense Complex to nourish, relieve dryness and reinforce the integrity of the skin’s barrier.

To use, just press the bottom of the tube, which will dispense a drop of the oil, I use about 5 drops, and press it into my skin. This can be used before the Calm Water Gel to restore the skin’s barrier and moisture, and prevent dehydration.

Moving on to the *Calm Water Gel (R890), which is essentially a burst of hydration. It contains two forms of hyaluronic acid, and turns from a gel into a liquid on application, and you can see and feel the increase in hydration levels immediately. At the launch, they actually tested the hydration levels of someone, and the levels were much higher after applying this. Aside from the immediate hydration, it also calms the skin, and leaves it feeling silky soft and supple. This gel moisturiser is super lightweight, and feels as if you have just applied a hydrating fluid onto your skin. It feels cool and refreshing, and increases the moisture levels at different skin layers, thanks to the two forms of hyaluronic acid. The Calm Water Gel also contains Glycerin and Apple Fruit Extract to hydrate and soften the skin, as well as Cactus Pear Extract to soothe and support healthy moisture balance.

To use, squeeze a small amount (and I mean small) onto fingertips, rub together to activate, and then pat onto the skin. This can be used over the Barrier Defense Booster, or over any other serum.

You can see the texture of both products above. The Barrier Defense Booster is a very light oil that is easily absorbed, and the Calm Water Gel is a lightweight gel that melts into a hydrating liquid when applied.

Both products are quite pricey, but contain around 95 uses, which works out to about R12 for the Barrier Defense Booster and R9 for the Calm Water Gel, per use.
