Dermalogica, one of my favourite skincare brands has launched a new product and reformulated another. I have been using them for the past few weeks and my skin is delighted. So, read on for my thoughts on the Brand New Daily Superfoliant and the Reformulated Age Reversal Eye Complex, plus a giveaway!
A focus in the skincare industry recently has been on the effects of pollution on the skin, and many brands have come out with anti-pollution products. Most of these are creams or serums designed to protect the skin from the damaging effects of pollution. Dermalogica has a different approach, in the form of the Daily Superfoliant.
The *Daily Superfoliant is described as a Next-gen powder exfoliant that provides a daily detox from skin-aging pollution. What does that even mean? Basically it is a highly-active resurfacer that gives you really smooth skin, while combatting pollutants that cause brown spots, fine lines and uneven skin tone.
Dr. Diana Howard, Vice President of Research & Development at Dermalogica explains, “As fine airborne particles land on the skin, they become lodged within the skin’s deeper structure, generating free radicals that trigger inflammation. The free radicals break down the skin’s natural lipid barrier, increasing trans-epidermal water loss, and create sensitised skin. In turn, we see signs of ageing such as pigmentation and structural degradation. When ageing is caused by inflammation, we call this ‘inflammaging’.”
Scary isn’t it! The Daily Superfoliant contains ingredients to alleviate the damaging effects of pollution on the skin, and lower the risk of ‘inflammaging’. It has Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Enzymes to exfoliate and resurface. It also has Activated Binchotan Charcoal to purify the skin, helping to adsorb environmental toxins from deep within the pores and Niacinamide, Red Algae and Tara Fruit Extract to help guard against the damaging effects of pollution.
The powder is activated with water, so there is no chance of this losing its efficacy anytime soon which is always something I worry about with expensive products, and luckily, you only use a half a teaspoon at a time. To use, after cleansing, rub half a teaspoon in wet hands to create a creamy foamy paste, apply in circular motions avoiding the eye area, massage gently, and then rinse with warm water. It is gentle enough to use every day, but I prefer to use it twice a week, and follow it with a hydrating mask to give me radiant glowing skin. This product is ideal for those concerned with ageing skin conditions, and since I just turned 30, that is me!
Next up, we have the new and improved *Age Reversal Eye Complex, Tougher on Fine Lines, Easier on the Eyes.
The new formula draws on microencapsulation technology and a unique firming complex to address multiple eye area concerns including fine lines and wrinkles, puffiness, dark under eye circles, and dryness lines. Microencapsulation technology is just a fancy term for how the ingredients are delivered into your skin. Microencapsulation of the ingredients ensures maximum potency, stability and controlled-release delivery deep within the skin layers, think of it as delivery via Courier as opposed to SAPO. The formula contains ingredients known to have skincare super-powers; Retinol 0.1% to accelerate cell turnover and renewal, Niacinamide to control inflammation and reduce the appearance of dark under-eye circles and Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate and soften the appearance of wrinkles. To use, after cleansing, smooth and pat around the eye area with the ring finger, working from the outer corner inward. Only apply on alternate nights for the first two weeks until the delicate eye area has built up a tolerance to retinol, once the skin acclimates it can be used nightly. Also, remember, if you are not already wearing spf everyday, which you should be, when using retinol it is especially important to use spf, as it can increase sun sensitivity due to its regenerative properties. I have been using this nightly, and it feels soft and velvety on the skin and has not led to any sensitivity or irritation. My main concern is dark under eye circles and preventing fine lines, which requires long term use before you can see results. Based on the ingredients though, this looks promising, I am an avid supporter of retinol!
The Daily Superfoliant comes in a 75g bottle and is R1 180. The Age Reversal Eye Complex comes in a 15ml tube for R990, although it currently shows R869 on the website. Both products are already available at authorised Dermalogica spas, salons, and skin centres, and at Dermalogica.co.za.
