Hi Ladies
Today I am sharing how I clean my makeup brushes effectively but affordably…
I hate washing my makeup brushes, I buy new brushes so that I have more time in between washes. But, washing your brushes is important for your skin, and just for general hygiene. There are so many expensive brush cleaning aids out there, such as the Sigma Brush Cleaner Glove and Mat, as well as all the Brush Shampoos. But this post is to shed some light on how cheaper alternatives can do the job just as well, maybe even better.
Rubybox Fresh in a Flash Brush Cleaner is an amazing quick clean product. You just spray it on your brush, and wipe it with a tissue. This works well as a pre-cleanse to your big wash, as well as a quick fix between your proper washes. Unfortunately Rubybox doesn’t sell these anymore, but I will do some research on an alternative. If any of you know of one, please do let me know.
Rubber Pet Brush, yes I use a pet brush. This brush works so well. After using a few squirts of the Rubybox brush cleaner on my dirty brush and rinsing it off, I put a few drops of baby shampoo on this pet brush, and then swirl my brush around in it. I think this was less than R30 from MRP Home, and it works like a charm.
I also sometimes use those plastic shower hair brushes (in the top picture), for denser brushes, such as some of my stippling brushes. I find that the plastic bristles help to dislodge all the gunk, and because the bristles are longer, they can get further up the brush. You can find the plastic brushes at Clicks or Dischem. The one I use is from Dischem.
And there you have it, an affordable and efficient way to clean your brushes!

What a clever way of washing brushes!!
I wash my brushes once a week!!
About once in 2 weeks
I wash them every fortnight as well, using Johnson’s baby shampoo for face brushes, MAC brush cleanser for eye brushes and the Beauty Blender liquid soap for sponges 🙂 def gonna try the pet brush idea – so clever and cost effective!
Awesome post and great tips Azraa. I wanted the Sigma mat and it’s always sold out but so expensive. Gonna pick up a pet brush cos the brush egg doesn’t work so great when you have lots of brushes to wash.
I wash my brushes once a month, sometimes a bit longer because I get lazy. Washing makeup brushes is the bane of my existence.
Great giveaway, would love to win and try it out. Following on Bloglovin – Ghairun-Nisaa Boolay
A pet brush …. thats a super idea!!! I use olive oil and baby shampoo to clean my brushes ….. but like once every two months 🙁
I use my beauty blender dupes the most – so I clean them once a week.
Congratulations to R. Fourie, you are the winner of the giveaway! Please email me your delivery address to prettifulblog@outlook.com

Thank you so much, Azraa! I am so exited and cannot wait. Thank you for your generosity :-))
Honestly- I have never washed my kabuki brush and I’ve chucked a few brushes and I have a stash of dirty brushes that I have to wash. The one I wash after every use is my gel liner brush- as it gets super hard. So I don’s have a choice LOL. Need to get some proper brushes- I have a few Chinese shop brushes LOL
Hmmm didn’t think of using a pet brush. I wash my brushes twice a month with baby shampoo 🙂

Great post! I wash my eye brushes all the time, like every other day, but that’s because I, personally, am pretty prone to eye infections. But every thing else about every two weeks when I use them every day.
To wash them just swirl them around in warm water with some anti bacterial soap until the water runs clear. Then squeeze the excess water out and re-shape.
To dry just lay them out flat on a towel over night or over the edge of the bathtub.
Do not soak them or allow the water to go into the metal, this is loosen the glue and cause your brushes to fall apart quicker. Other than that, it’s pretty straight forward!
